Last time, I mentioned that a variety of conflicts prevented my timely completion of Dark Souls 3. One of the most significant was actually another game: Overwatch. Overwatch is Blizzard’s new MOBA FPS LOL, in which you can play as a ninja, a gorilla, a girl with a butt, or whatever, and help a truck find parking, or save their parking space. I literally knew nothing about this game before its release, and apparently know less now.

But I can’t stop playing.

It’s weird for a game to be so minimal on the surface, and yet be so nuanced in its execution and “secret sauce”, which I’ll get to in a bit. I’ve never been one for competitive team-based games like Team Fortress 2, Call of Duty, League of Legends or others that I never bothered to learn the names of. My awful aim aside, I just never found them engaging enough. I’ve never been great at being a team player, and I never cared to be. Overwatch changed that. Between the characters having Pixar-level personalities and the game being just engaging enough to want to keep playing, but low stakes enough to feel fun, it has made every game, win or lose, an absolute joy. It makes me want to be a part of the team, because my team needs more than another gun going off.

And then there’s the aforementioned secret sauce. The community. A positive, experimental and fun environment, Blizzard has attracted the right kind of people, players who are inspired by Overwatch’s world and its principles of team building and being a hero. There are millions of fans already, and I actually WANT to be considered one of them. I hate to admit it, but it’s been a while since the gaming community has felt that way to me.

I have nothing else to say about this game. Seriously, what else is there even to say? I can go off about the 21 characters, list my favorite ones to play (Reinhardt and Mercy), or even rag on its limited modes and how I just keep getting repeat sprays in my loot boxes. But all I can say is I really like Overwatch because it’s fun. And isn’t that so fucking refreshing to say about a game?
